'To pray. But to whom.' With these pithy words, Stefan Hertmans summarizes the inner conflict of his title heroine in his erudite and captivating novel De bekeerlinge. With Vigdis Adelaïs, Hertmans created a strong woman who, during the First Crusade at the end of the 11th century, became torn between her Christian upbringing and the Jewish faith, to which she converted for her lover, after which she adopted the name Hamoutal. The Convert tells the story of a young mother who becomes the victim of a pogrom in times of religious violence and meets a tragic end in her search for her kidnapped children.
Unique city choir on stage
In May 2022, Operaballet Vlaanderen will perform the new opera 'De Bekeerlinge'. Soprano Lore Binon sings the title role, six singers from different vocal traditions perform the numerous other characters. In addition to members of the Choir and the Children's Choir of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, an Antwerp city choir is also part of the line-up. Making this dream come true is working Opera Ballet Vlaanderen together with Kunstlab Madam Fortuna and Het Oude Badhuis.
Director and visual artist Hans Op de Beeck, who is also responsible for the scenography and costume design, creates a poetic visual world.
